A Day at Postojna Cave Park

Your adventure wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Postojna Cave Park. It includes two major attractions in Slovenia: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. You can visit either of them or both in one day.

Here is some detailed information on both.

Postojna Cave: A Tourist’s Guide

Postojna Cave is a stunning natural wonder that attracts visitors from around the world. This magnificent karst cave system, formed over 2 million years ago, is one of the most famous in Europe, renowned for its breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and unique underground features.

Formation

The formation of Postojna Cave began during the Pleistocene epoch, as water from the nearby River Pivka slowly eroded the limestone, creating an extensive network of tunnels and chambers. The cave stretches over 24 kilometers (15 miles), making it one of the longest cave systems in the world. Its fascinating geological formations, including impressive rock formations and delicate draperies, captivate geologists and tourists alike.

Cave Tours and What to Expect

  1. The train ride inside Postojna Cave is a real treat, taking about 10 minutes as it whisks you through the amazing underground world. Both kids and adults will be wowed by the stunning rock formations and the unique vibe down there. One highlight of the ride is the Great Hall, where you can check out the impressive chandeliers that light up this huge space.
  2. After the train ride, you’ll hop off for a walking tour that lasts around 1.5 hours. This is where the fun really begins as you get up close to all sorts of cool stalagmites and stalactites. Each formation has its own story, and you’ll be amazed by the intricate shapes and sparkling surfaces. From towering columns to delicate drapes, every corner reveals something new and exciting, making it a fantastic adventure for everyone!

Baby Dragons and Biodiversity

One of the most intriguing aspects of Postojna Cave is its biodiversity. The cave is home to the famous Proteus anguinus, commonly known as the “baby dragon” or “human fish.” This unique, blind amphibian thrives in the dark, aquatic environment of the cave and can live for over 100 years. While on the tour, keep an eye out for the famed baby dragons.

Underground Postal Service

One of the cave’s quirky features is its underground postal service, established in the 19th century. Visitors can send postcards from within the cave, a fun and memorable way to share your experience with friends and family.

Practical Information:

  • Location: Postojna Cave is easily accessible, located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital.
  • Opening Hours: The cave is open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season. It’s advisable to check in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
  • Tickets: It’s recommended to purchase tickets online to avoid long queues, especially during summer.
  • Temperature: The temperature inside the cave is a consistent 10°C (50°F) year-round, so wearing a jacket or layers is essential. If you forget to bring warm clothing, jackets are available for rent at the entrance of the cave.

Predjama Castle: A Marvel of History and Architecture

Nestled in the picturesque region of Slovenia, Predjama Castle is a stunning Renaissance fortress built within the mouth of a cave. This unique architectural marvel, located just 11 km from Postojna, has a rich history dating back to its first mention in 1274. The castle’s strategic position under a natural rocky arch made it nearly impregnable, serving as a formidable stronghold throughout the centuries.

Predjama Castle’s history is intertwined with legends, particularly those of the 15th-century knight Erasmus of Lueg, a notorious robber baron who used the castle as his hideout. The castle we see today was reconstructed in the Renaissance style in 1570 by Baron Philipp von Cobenzl, after the original Gothic structure was destroyed. The castle’s design ingeniously integrates the natural cave, with its rear walls formed by the cliff itself, creating a seamless blend of human ingenuity and natural beauty.

Over the centuries, Predjama Castle has had several notable owners like Luegg, Oberbug, Cobenzl families.

What to Expect When Visiting

Upon your first glimpse of Predjama Castle, you’ll be struck by its dramatic and imposing presence, perched halfway up a 123-meter-high cliff. Visitors can explore various rooms, including the knight’s room, dining hall, and Renaissance hall, each filled with historical artifacts and replicas. The castle also features a secret tunnel used by Erasmus to smuggle supplies during sieges. This tunnel, a natural vertical shaft, connected the cave with the other side of the cliff, allowing Erasmus to secretly bring in supplies even when the castle was under siege.

For a comprehensive experience, you can join guided groups or opt for an audio guide, which provides detailed information about the castle’s history and architecture. One of the highlights of the visit is entering the cave at the top of the castle, which adds an adventurous element to the tour.

Ticket Prices and Combination Visits

Tickets for Predjama Castle cost €19. For a more extensive experience, you can combine your visit with a tour of the nearby Postojna Cave. A combination ticket for both attractions is available for €42, offering a €7 saving compared to purchasing separate tickets.

Featured in Movies and TV Shows

Predjama Castle’s unique and well-preserved medieval architecture has made it a popular filming location. It has appeared in various movies and TV shows, most recently in season 3 of Netflix’s The Witcher series. The castle’s dramatic setting and historical ambiance make it a perfect backdrop for fantasy and historical productions.

Practical Information:

  • Timing: Plan your visit early in the day to avoid crowds, especially during peak tourist seasons.
  • Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes as the castle has steep steps and narrow passages.
  • Weather: The castle is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from May to September when the cave under the castle is also accessible.
